Step 1 : Character Sketch
Actor
In the story, Dill is constantly telling Jem and Scout about movies and films he has seen back home. And since Dill can’t show them the movie he chooses to act it out. And over the summers the kids like to play made up games in where they act as a character and in the book it always describes Dill as over enthusiastic when it comes to acting. An example can be found on page 8 towards the second half of the page. The kids during the summer like to act out games so their opinion towards dill is: “In this matter we are lucky to have Dill. He played the character parts formerly thrust upon me – the ape in Tarzan, Mr. Crabtree in The Rover Boy, and Mr. Damon in Tom Swift.” (Lee Chapter 1 pg 8). Therefore I see Dill as an actor.
Tale Teller
In the story, Dill is always telling Scout and Jem about these amazing things he does but Jem and Scout know better than to trust this sly devil. In the story they are trying to give the note to Boo and Dill thinks Boo has a beard so hes nice. So scout says: "Like your daddy's?" "He ain't got a beard, he-- " Dill stopped, as if trying to remember. " Uh huh, caughtcha," I said. " You said 'fore you were off the train good your daddy had a black beard--" (Lee Chapter 5 pg47). So I therefore conclude dill is a tale teller.
Curious
“…and it was then that Dill gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out. The Radley place fascinated Dill, In spite of our warnings it drew him as the moon draws water, but drew him no nearer than the light-pole on the corner. A safe distance from the Radley gate, there he would stand his arms around the fat pole staring and wondering...” Pg. 8
Step 2: Theme
Curiosity: Since Dill first met Jem and Scout, he had a fascination with Boo Radley. Jem and Scout told Dill stories about The Radley Place. Proof of this is found on page 8 where the narration says, “In spite of our warnings and explanations it drew him as the moon draws water…” Even though fear is found throughout the group, they’re drawn to the house. Dill wants to find out more about Boo, even if it means almost getting shot.
Step 3: Questions
1.) What kind of a history do Dill and Scout have that he would ask her to marry him?
2.) Why is Dill so curious about Boo Radley and the Radley Family?
3.) Why does Scout always beat up Dill? So why does Scout not like him/ have anger towards him?
Step 4: Predictions
1.) I predict that when Dill comes back to Maycomb for the summer, he, Jem and scout will continue to mess with Boo Radley’s house and try to find out more about him.
2.) Another prediction I have is Dill and Scout may develop a crush on each other.
3.) I also predict that Jem will get tired of Dill always following him around, and get annoyed because of Dill’s crush on his kid sister Scout.
Step 5: Symbol A great symbol that would represent Dill would be a pet dog, or a man’s best friend. Dill is constantly following Jem around like a lost puppy, or constantly following his leader—whatever Jem says, goes.
